The whole outside, not one surface

Different surfaces, different methods, one visit.

An exterior clean is rarely one job. A typical request mixes green-streaked render, grubby uPVC fascias, a slippery deck and a patio, and each needs its own approach: a low-pressure soft-wash with a cleaning solution for render and cladding, hand washing for plastics and painted timber, and the right pressure for paving.

The risk is treating everything the same. A jet that is fine on concrete can force water behind cladding, strip the texture from render or furrow a timber deck. So exterior jobs on Cleanifiq are quoted from photos and a short video, and the method for each surface goes into the quote.

The request has room for a description in your own words, photos and a video. Providers price what they can see, and say if part of it isn’t work they take on.

  • Every surface named

Render, cladding, fascias, decking and paving each listed in the quote, with the method for each.

  • Height agreed first

Anything above ground-floor reach is quoted only with the way it will be reached written down.

  • Payment held

Cleanifiq keeps your money until the job is completed on the platform.

  • Reviews you can trust

Reviews on provider profiles come only from booked, paid jobs.

Settle these in the messages before you accept

  • which surfaces are in the quote, and which method each one gets
  • how anything above the ground floor will be reached, or that it is left out
  • whether an algae treatment is included, and how plants, ponds and pets are protected from it
  • that you’ll provide an outside tap and a power socket: without them the job can’t start, and a no-access visit counts as a cancellation

Honest limit: cleaning won’t fix render that is cracked or blown, cladding faded by the sun or timber that has rotted. A careful provider will point these out from your photos rather than promise a result cleaning can’t give.

Free to request. One request can cover every surface outside.

From the walls to the decking.

These are the surfaces exterior requests usually include. Not every provider does every one, so list what you need and see who quotes for it.

  • Render, harling and pebbledash

Green and black streaks are mostly algae and dirt. Render is normally soft-washed: a cleaning solution applied at low pressure, left to work, then rinsed. Painted, silicone and traditional renders each need the method checked.

  • Cladding

uPVC, composite, timber and metal cladding are washed at low pressure, working with the overlaps so water isn’t driven in behind the boards.

  • Fascias, soffits and gutters

The white plastic along the roofline turns grey and streaky. Washing its outside faces and clearing gutters is work at height, quoted only by providers equipped for it.

  • Decking and fences

Timber and composite decks go slippery with algae. They need low pressure and the right cleaning solution; a hard jet raises the grain of timber.

  • Patios, paths and driveways

Hard paving is classic pressure-washing work. Add it to an exterior clean, or book it on its own on the pressure washing page.

  • Walls, steps and bin stores

Garden walls, front steps, bin stores and side passages: often the first thing visitors see, and quick to add to a bigger job.

When an exterior clean earns its cost.

People tend to book the outside at a particular moment for the property, and the timing changes what to ask for.

  • Before selling or letting

Clean render and a clear path change the first impression in listing photos and at viewings. Book it a week or two before the photographer comes.

  • After winter

Wet months leave algae on north-facing walls, decks and steps. Spring is when slippery surfaces matter most.

  • After building work

Dust, mortar splashes and footprints across paving and sills. Hardened mortar and paint splashes may need more than washing, so say what’s there.

  • For a block or a let property

Between tenancies, or as an annual job for a block’s common areas, booked by the owner, the letting agent or the factor.

What to send

Describe the outside the way you’d show it.

The request asks for a description, photos and a short video. This is what makes them useful to a provider.

  1. 1

    A list of surfaces

Walls, cladding, fascias, decking and paving: what each is made of, and roughly how big.

  2. 2

    A walk-round video

A short video around the outside shows the heights, the access and the worst areas better than ten photos.

  3. 3

    Height and access

How many storeys, whether there is side access to the back, and where the outside tap and a socket are.

Prefer a provider to see it first? For jobs that need seeing first, some providers offer an in-person visit. Your first visit for a job is free (one free visit per postcode every 7 days); a second provider’s visit fee is shown before you book it and refunded if they cancel. A quote given after a visit is valid for up to 3 months.

What exterior providers usually quote for.

Providers quote for the surfaces in your request. These are the common ones.

  • Walls

    • Render and pebbledash, soft-washed
    • Brick and stone, at a pressure set for them
  • Cladding and trims

    • uPVC and composite cladding
    • Fascias and soffits within safe reach
    • Door and window frames from outside
  • Timber

    • Decking
    • Fences and gates
  • Paving

    • Patios and paths
    • Driveways and steps
  • Graffiti

    • Walls, doors and shutters, through the graffiti option

Not included unless quoted

  • Roof cleaning and roof moss
  • Repairs to render, cladding, gutters or timber
  • Repainting, staining or sealing
  • Work at height without the access method stated
  • Window glass (book window cleaning)

The scope is the quote you accept. Anything added on the day is priced and agreed in the platform first.

Exterior cleaning or pressure washing?

One surface, or the whole outside?

Both go through the same exterior request, and some providers do both. The difference is the job: pressure washing is for hard ground surfaces, while exterior cleaning covers the building itself and everything around it, where a jet is often the wrong tool.

Choose exterior cleaning for

  • render, harling, pebbledash or cladding on the walls
  • fascias, soffits, gutters and trims
  • timber decking and fences
  • a mix of surfaces in one visit

Choose pressure washing for

  • a driveway, patio, path or steps on their own
  • block paving that may need re-sanding afterwards
  • a seasonal clean of hard paving

Graffiti

Paint on the walls as well?

Graffiti has its own request type, because paint needs a remover rather than a wash. Choose it, and send a photo of the mark and the surface it’s on.

How much does exterior cleaning cost in Edinburgh?

Exterior jobs vary too much for a price list: the front wall of a terrace and a detached house with render, cladding and a deck are different days’ work. Each provider quotes from what you send, and Cleanifiq doesn’t yet have enough exterior jobs to publish a fair average.

Height drives the price more than anything else. Ground-floor work is quick to set up, while upper storeys need longer poles or access equipment. Each provider also sets a minimum call-out.

What affects the price

  • Which surfaces, and the area of each
  • Height: the number of storeys, and whether access equipment is needed
  • The method: a soft-wash with treatment takes longer than a rinse
  • How long it has been since the last clean
  • Access to the back, an outside tap and power

Why quotes differ

Some providers specialise in soft-washing render, others in paving and decking. A quote for the whole job can look very different from one that leaves out the high parts, so check what each covers before comparing totals.

Protected from request to sign-off.

  • Your payment is held

You choose at checkout: pay a deposit (20% of the job, or the provider’s minimum call-out fee if that’s higher) or pay in full. If you pay a deposit, the balance is due by 7:30am on the day of the job. Your money goes to Cleanifiq, not the provider, and release to the provider starts the day after the job, once they’ve completed it on the platform.

  • Not right? Tell us within 48 hours

Tell us within 48 hours of the job, with photos or a short video of what isn’t right. Your provider gets 48 working hours to come back and put it right at no cost to you, and we hold their payment until it’s settled. If they can’t or won’t, you choose: the value of the unfinished items back as a refund or Cleanifiq credit, or a new, smaller job for just those items with another provider (you see the price before confirming anything).

  • Checked before they quote

Before a provider can take bookings we check photo ID, proof of address and public liability insurance, plus a criminal record check (Basic Disclosure Scotland or equivalent) and right to work where it applies. For companies we check a director’s ID, the business address, public liability insurance and Companies House status. Documents with expiry dates are re-checked when they expire. Every review on a provider’s profile comes from a booked, paid job. Cleanifiq’s insurance covers a new provider’s first three jobs while their own cover is being verified.

  • Keep it on the platform

Always pay through Cleanifiq, including for anything added on the day. Work paid for privately falls outside our guarantee, our insurance and our dispute resolution.

Exterior cleaning in Edinburgh

Stone terraces and newer estates.

Cleanifiq has no completed exterior jobs in Edinburgh yet, so you may get one quote or none at first. This is what matters for an Edinburgh exterior.

  • Listed and conservation-area buildings

Cleaning the stone façade of a listed building can need listed building consent, so check with the City of Edinburgh Council first. Gardens, decks and paving don’t raise the question.

  • Newer estates around the city

Render, cladding and composite decking are common on newer homes around Livingston (EH54) and Bathgate (EH48), both busy districts for Cleanifiq. These are exactly the surfaces soft-washing is for.

  • Near the Forth

Homes in Leith, Portobello and along the shore pick up salt and damp from the sea air, which leaves a film on cladding, frames and garden furniture. Say if the property is close to the water.

FAQ

Exterior Cleaning in Edinburgh: your questions

A low-pressure clean for render, cladding and roofline plastics: a cleaning solution is applied, left to work on the algae and dirt, then rinsed off gently. It suits surfaces a jet would damage. Ask which solution a provider uses if you have plants or pets nearby.
Usually, if the method suits the render: a soft-wash rather than a strong jet. Send close-ups so providers can see whether it is painted, textured or cracked; cracked or blown render needs a repair, not a clean.
Some providers do, from the ground with long poles or with access equipment. It’s work at height, so it’s only included when the quote says so and states how the gutters will be reached.
Partly. Pressure washing is one method, and the best one for hard paving. Exterior cleaning covers the building as well, where low pressure is usually safer. If your job is only a driveway or a patio, book pressure washing.
Possibly few: Cleanifiq has had no exterior jobs in Edinburgh so far. Requesting is free, and if no provider covering your postcode can do it, you’ve lost nothing. For a listed façade, check consent with the City of Edinburgh Council before booking.
For jobs that need seeing first, some providers offer an in-person visit. Your first visit for a job is free (one free visit per postcode every 7 days); a second provider’s visit fee is shown before you book it and refunded if they cancel. A quote given after a visit is valid for up to 3 months.
