Steam Carpet Cleaning in Glasgow: hot-water extraction for carpets, sofas and mattresses

Steam cleaning is hot-water extraction: hot water and a cleaning solution go into the pile and come straight back out with the dirt. Book it for carpets, stairs, fabric sofas and mattresses from the West End to East Kilbride, and pay through Cleanifiq, which holds the money until the job is done.

How it works

Steam cleaning, explained. Hot water in, dirt out.

What most people call steam carpet cleaning is properly called hot-water extraction. Very little actual steam is involved: the work is done by hot water, a cleaning solution and strong suction, and the suction matters as much as the heat, because the water that goes into the carpet has to come back out.

It is the method most people picture when they think of a professional carpet clean, and on Cleanifiq it covers the whole soft-furnishing side of a home in one booking: carpeted rooms, halls, stairs, fabric sofas and armchairs, loose cushions and mattresses.

Your provider brings the machine and the solutions. You provide access to water and a socket near the rooms being cleaned.

What your provider does, in order

  1. A hoover first

Dry grit comes out far more easily dry than as mud, so every Cleanifiq carpet booking starts with a pre-clean hoover of the areas being cleaned.

  2. Marks treated before the main clean

The stains you described are pre-treated with a solution suited to the mark and given time to work. Telling us what caused a stain (wine, coffee, mud, a pet accident) helps the provider choose.

  3. Hot water in, dirty water out

The machine sprays hot water mixed with a cleaning solution into the pile and, in the same pass, extracts it with the loosened dirt. Heavily soiled areas get more than one pass.

  4. Pile set and drying advice

Many providers then brush the pile in one direction so it dries evenly. Either way, your provider tells you how long to keep off the carpet and how to help it dry.

Carpets and fabrics

What suits steam cleaning. And what doesn’t.

Most carpets and fabric furniture in a typical home are fine with hot water. A few need a gentler approach, and some shouldn’t get wet at all. If you aren’t sure what your carpet is made of, say so in the booking.

Usually a good fit

  • Synthetic carpets

Nylon, polyester and polypropylene, the carpet in most homes and rentals, handle hot water well.

  • Halls, stairs and landings

They take the most traffic, so they are usually where a clean makes the most visible difference.

  • Fabric sofas and armchairs

Fabrics with a W or W/S cleaning code on the label suit water-based cleaning. Seats, backs and arms are covered; loose cushions are listed separately.

  • Mattresses

The top surface and sides, with the marks you describe treated.

Check with your provider first

  • Wool and wool-rich carpet

Wool can be steam cleaned, but at lower temperatures and with wool-safe solutions, and it dries more slowly. Say it is wool when you book.

  • Delicate upholstery

Velvet, chenille and linen weaves can mark or change texture when wet. Ask before booking them.

  • Loose or old carpet

Carpet that isn’t stretched tight, or has lifting seams, can ripple when wet. Your provider will look before starting.

  • Rooms you can’t air

If you can’t heat or ventilate the room for a few hours, mention it so less water is used.

Not suited, or not offered

  • Sisal, seagrass, jute and coir

Natural plant fibres can shrink, stain or brown when wet. Neither steam nor shampoo suits them, and Cleanifiq doesn’t offer dry carpet cleaning.

  • Silk and viscose rugs

Water can distort them for good. They need a specialist, usually off-site, which isn’t part of a booking.

  • Leather sofas

Leather cleaning and restoration aren’t included in carpet and upholstery bookings.

  • Upholstery coded S or X

S means solvent cleaning only and X means hoover only, so hot water is the wrong method for both.

Drying time

How long until you can use the room? It depends, and here is on what.

Done well, hot-water extraction leaves the carpet damp rather than wet, because the machine pulls the water back out with the dirt. How long the rest takes to dry depends on things your provider can only judge in the room, so we don’t print one number for every carpet.

What decides it

  • The fibre: wool holds more water than synthetics and dries more slowly.
  • How dirty it was: heavily stained areas get more passes, so more water.
  • Pile depth: a deep or shaggy pile takes longer than a short, tight one.
  • Warmth and air: heating on, a window open and doors open between rooms make the biggest difference.
  • The weather: a cold, damp day slows everything down.

While it dries

  • Walk on it as little as possible, and never in outdoor shoes; if you must cross it, clean socks are better than bare feet.
  • Leave furniture off the carpet until it is dry, or stand the legs on foil or plastic blocks so wood stain and rust can’t mark it.
  • Keep pets and small children out of the room until it is dry.
  • Leave a cleaned mattress uncovered until it is dry right through before you make the bed.
  • Ask your provider how long to keep off it before they leave: they have seen how wet the carpet got.

Need the room back the same evening, for guests or a check-out inspection? Say so in the booking. A morning slot and a warm, aired room give the carpet the most time.

Stains, pets, allergies

What steam can do. And what it can’t.

These are the three reasons most people book a steam clean. Here is the honest version of each, so the result matches what you expected.

Stains

Hot-water extraction is good at the general dirt that dulls a carpet and at recent spills. Old marks are harder: bleach, dye transfer or a stain walked in for years may have changed the colour of the fibre itself. Every stain you describe is treated; full removal can’t be promised, and your provider tells you what to expect before they start.

Pets

Hair comes out with the pre-clean hoover and the extraction, though very heavy hair can be an extra. Urine is the hard case: if it has soaked into the underlay, cleaning the carpet doesn’t reach it and the smell can come back. The booking asks whether you have pets and suggests pet-friendly products.

Allergies and sensitivities

We don’t make health claims, so you won’t read here that steam kills dust mites or removes allergens. What you can control: choose eco-friendly or pet-friendly products when you book, ask your provider which solution they use, and keep the room aired while it dries.

Describe the stains and pets once; every provider who quotes sees it.

Before the visit

Ten minutes of preparation. A better clean.

  • Clear the floor

Pick up shoes, toys, cables, plants and anything fragile. Whatever stays on the carpet stays dirty underneath.

  • Decide about the furniture

Moving heavy furniture isn’t part of the booking. Move what you can; your provider can price moving lighter pieces as an extra, only with your OK.

  • No need to hoover

A pre-clean hoover is part of the job, so you don’t have to do it yourself.

  • Water and power

Your provider needs access to water and a socket near the rooms being cleaned. Say where they are.

  • Count the stairs and seats

The booking asks how many stairs there are and how many seats your sofas have in total, and the price is built from those numbers.

  • Describe the carpet

Add the fibre if you know it, the worst stains and what caused them, and where pets have had accidents, in the booking’s instructions.

  • Access and parking

The machine is heavy. Give your floor, lift and entry details, and answer the parking question so any parking cost is agreed upfront.

  • Plan the rest of the day

Book when the room can stay empty and warm for a few hours afterwards, with pets kept elsewhere.

The other method

When shampoo is the better choice

Steam is the default for most homes, but it isn’t the only option on Cleanifiq. Carpet shampooing works a cleaning solution into the pile with a machine brush; that agitation helps loosen dirt ground into flattened, heavily trodden carpet, and some providers prefer it for exactly that.

Shampoo may suit you better when:

  • Your hall and stairs are matted and grey from years of traffic, where brushing helps lift the pile.
  • You want more prices to compare, or your date is fixed and no steam provider is free that day.
  • Your provider has looked at the carpet and recommends it.

Both methods are priced the same way, so switching doesn’t change how your quote is built, only the provider’s rate.

Price

How much does steam carpet cleaning cost in Glasgow?

Steam is priced like every Cleanifiq carpet job. Each room, hall, stair, sofa, armchair, cushion and mattress has a set time for the condition you choose, and the provider’s own steam rate turns that time into a fixed price before you book.

The default times are the same for steam and shampoo. What differs is the rate: providers set one for steam and a separate one for shampoo, so compare the totals rather than the method.

Most providers also have a minimum call-out, so a single mattress or one small room often costs the minimum. Putting the hall, the stairs or the sofa on the same visit is better value.

The default time for each item and condition is listed on the carpet cleaning page for Glasgow.

No typical Glasgow price yet

Only 5 standalone steam bookings were accepted in Glasgow in the 12 months to October 2026: too few for a typical price we would stand behind. Your quote shows the exact total before you accept it.

Local to Glasgow

Steam carpet cleaning in Glasgow: what to plan for

Glasgow is Cleanifiq’s home city and the only one with a settled group of steam providers. A few local details decide whether the visit runs smoothly or slowly.

Five providers, so book a few days ahead

Five providers sent quotes for steam cleaning in Glasgow in the six months to October 2026. That is enough to compare, but not enough to count on a same-day slot. If the date is fixed, request early; if the date matters more than the method, shampooing has twice as many Glasgow providers.

Top-floor tenement flats

An extraction machine with its water tanks is heavy, and many Glasgow tenements have three or four flights of common stair and no lift. Put the floor, the close entry code and where to park in the booking, so your provider allows time for the carry.

Moving out in Scotland

Under a Private Residential Tenancy your deposit is held by SafeDeposits Scotland, Letting Protection Service Scotland or mydeposits Scotland, and any cleaning deduction is weighed against the check-in inventory. If that inventory notes professionally cleaned carpets, a dated steam-clean booking from the platform is useful evidence, and adding carpets to your end of tenancy clean keeps it to one visit.

FAQ

Steam carpet cleaning in Glasgow: your questions

Not really. The proper name is hot-water extraction: hot water and a cleaning solution are sprayed into the pile and immediately extracted with strong suction, together with the dirt they loosen. The name stuck because the water is hot.
Five providers sent quotes for carpet steam cleaning in Glasgow in the six months to October 2026, so you can expect a choice, but not every provider is free on every date. Requesting a few days ahead gives you the widest pick.
It depends on the fibre, how much water the carpet needed, the pile and how warm and airy the room is, so we don’t promise a single figure. Your provider tells you how long to keep off it before they leave; heating on, a window open and doors open between rooms all help.
Usually, with care: wool needs lower temperatures and wool-safe solutions, and it dries more slowly than synthetic carpet. Say it is wool when you book. Natural plant fibres such as sisal, seagrass, jute and coir aren’t suited to steam or shampoo.
Yes, in the same booking as the carpets. The booking asks how many sofas you have and how many seats they have in total, with armchairs, loose cushions and mattresses listed separately. Check the cleaning code on a sofa’s label first: W or W/S fabrics suit water-based cleaning, S or X don’t, and leather isn’t included.
It can help with recent accidents on the carpet itself, but if urine has soaked into the underlay, cleaning the carpet doesn’t reach it and the smell can return. Tell your provider where the accidents were so they can say honestly what to expect.
We don’t make that claim: a steam clean removes dirt from carpets and upholstery, and we don’t publish health claims about it. If allergies are a concern, choose eco-friendly products when you book, ask which solution your provider uses, and keep the room aired while it dries.
Steam suits most synthetic carpets, fabric sofas and mattresses. Shampooing works a solution into the pile with a machine brush, and some providers prefer it for matted, heavily trodden carpet; in Glasgow and Edinburgh more providers offer it. If you are unsure, describe the carpet and your provider will say before starting if the other method suits it better.
Tell us within 48 hours of the job, with photos or a short video of what isn’t right. Your provider comes back to put it right at no cost to you, and we hold their payment until it’s settled. If they can’t or won’t, you choose: the value of the unfinished items back as a refund or Cleanifiq credit, a new, smaller job for just those items with another provider (you see the price before confirming), or both.
Yes, you can cancel your booking, but cancellation fees may apply depending on timing. More than 2 weeks before: full refund with no deductions. Between 2 weeks and 2 days before: a payment processing fee of 1.69%–5% (depending on payment method) is retained and the rest is refunded. Less than 2 days before (or failing to pay by 7:30 AM on cleaning day): your deposit is retained as a slot reservation fee. After the provider starts: you owe the minimum callout fee or work completed, whichever is greater. Whenever money comes back to you, you can take it as Cleanifiq credit instead of a refund, sometimes with a bonus on top. This policy keeps things fair for both customers and Glasgow providers.
